Over time the complicated inner workings of a piano begin to wear out. This is due to playing as well aging of the parts and changes in temperature and humidity. Parts in a piano are made of wood, felt rubber and metal which all exhibit different properties of aging, much like an automobile. Eventually replacement of these parts is necessary to restore the sound and value of the instrument.
